  23. net for about five months and am only now catching up on all my email.

  26. as the proper submission address for rec.arts.sf.announce.

  30.             What is rec.arts.sf.*?
  31.   Rec.arts.sf.* (r.a.sf.*) is a set of newsgroups devoted to discussion
  32. of SF, in its rather broad meaning of "speculative fiction", including
  33. both science fiction and fantasy, as well as that vast blurred mass of
  34. material in between (to steal a phrase from the call for votes that
  35. caused the creation of these groups).

  37.         So what groups are there, anyway?
  38. Here's a short, one-line-per-group listing of the groups:

  40. rec.arts.sf.misc    Replaces rec.arts.sf-lovers as the catch-all
  41. rec.arts.sf.announce     Announcements (moderated: zorch@uunet.uu.net)
  42. rec.arts.sf.fandom    Fannish activities, cons, etc.
  43. rec.arts.sf.marketplace    Personal for-sale notices
  44. rec.arts.sf.movies    SF movies that don't have their own groups
  45. rec.arts.sf.reviews    Reviews of sf/fantasy/horror works (Moderated)
  46. rec.arts.sf.science    Science and theory related to sf
  47. rec.arts.sf.starwars    Star wars, books, movies, etc
  48. rec.arts.sf.tv        SF tv shows that don't have their own groups

  53.   Some of those one-liners might not be very clear...which is why the
  54. original charters of the groups are included here as well.  They show
  55. the intent of the people who advocated most strongly for them.

  58.         Other newsgroups of interest to SF fans
  59.   For Dr. Who fans, there's a newsgroup specifically for discussions
  60. about the movies, the show, and anything and everything related to Dr.
  61. Who: rec.arts.drwho.
  62.   For Red Dwarf, alt.tv.red-dwarf
  63.   For Star Trek fans, there are several groups:
  64.   rec.arts.startrek.info.  A distillation of news and information
  65. about Star Trek, including synopses of new episodes, convention
  66. reports, station airing times around the US and the world, and other
  67. tidbits of factual information about Trek.  Moderated: send submissions
  68. to trek-info@dweeb.fx.com; questions or comments should be sent to
  69. trek-info-request@deeb.fx.com.
  70.   rec.arts.startrek.current, r.a.s.fandom, r.a.s.tech, and r.a.s.misc
  71. were recently created.  There is a monthly information posting in those
  72. groups (and in news.answers, eventually) which describes all of r.a.startrek
  73. in detail.
  74.   For Cyberpunk: alt.cyberpunk.  There's also alt.cyberpunk.chatsubo,
  75. virtual reality via prose interaction.
  76.   Fandom has its own groups, as well: alt.fandom.cons and alt.fandom.misc.
  77.   For Pern fans, look in alt.fan.pern.

  84.      Charter: Group rec.arts.sf.misc will be the general-purpose
  85.               and spillover group for science fiction and fantasy
  86.           discussions that do not find a more specific subgroup 
  87.           under rec.arts.sf.*, or that would otherwise require 
  88.           wide crossposting among the other subgroups.

  90. rec.arts.sf.announce (moderated, <sf-announce-request@uunet.uu.net>)
  91.      Charter: (moderated) Announcements of happenings in the
  92.               SF world, such as cons, including calls for con
  93.               participation, readings, deaths, honors, new SF
  94.               mailing lists, periodic postings of rec.arts.sf
  95.               subgroup charters and other administrivia,
  96.               signings, TV specials, meetings, shop openings and
  97.               closings, etc. Not for personal or commercial ads.

  102.      Charter: Discussions of fannish activities; meant to provide

  105.               postings current in rec.arts.sf-lovers.

  107. rec.arts.sf.marketplace
  108.      Charter: A place for personal wanted-to-buy and for-sale ads
  109.               for SF related materials.  Personal ads only;
  110.               commercial ads belong in comp.newprod or commercial
  111.               advertising channels, not elsewhere on USENet.  Do
  112.               NOT crosspost ads; those looking to buy or sell SF
  113.               stuff will be reading this group and just annoyed
  114.               by ads mixed in elsewhere.

  116. rec.arts.sf.movies
  117.      Charter: Discussions of all aspects of SF related movies not
  118.               otherwise covered in more specific groups (such as
  119.               the Star Trek group).  Specifically includes
  120.               screenplays looking for producers, and discussions
  121.               of novelizations as compared to the movie base;
  122.               discussion of novelizations independent of the 
  123.               related movie belong in .written.

  125. rec.arts.sf.reviews (moderated)
  126.     Charter: Reviews and critical discussion of SF/fantasy/horror 
  127.          works.  Works include novels, short fiction, movies,
  128.          music, periodicals, art, etc., that are of interest to
  129.          the SF community.  Reviews are expected to conform to
  130.          the guidelines in the FAQ "Welcome to rec.arts.sf.reviews"
  131.          posted to the group periodically and available by
  132.          anonymous FTP on the host turbo.bio.net [134.172.2.69]
  133.          (file: sf-reviews/welcome).  Archives of the group are also
  134.          available on turbo.bio.net in the directory sf-reviews.

  140.      Charter: A home for the spinoff discussion of real and
  141.               speculative science and sometimes about how the
  142.               laws of science could be used in creating new SF
  143.               universes.

  145. rec.arts.sf.tv
  146.      Charter: A group for discussing general television SF, both
  147.               live acted and cartoons.  Note that some tv shows,
  148.           (such as Dr. Who and Star Trek) have their own
  149.           specialized newsgroups as well.

  152.      Charter: A group for discussing the general SF which is seen
  153.               by its audience in written form, whether printed or
  154.               online.  Note that many more specific groups in
  155.               rec.arts.sf.* exist to pull some traffic from this
  156.               group, but in general, this is where new releases
  157.               are discussed, informal reviews given, continuity
  158.               topics discussed, authors compared, and is the
  159.               starting point for many threads which should
  160.               eventually be moved to more appropriate groups.
